Welcome to Aiki Kids

Thank you for registering your child in the upcoming Summer Aiki Kid’s program.  We look forward to your participation.  Our dojo is located upstairs above the Montana State Driver’s Service office at 1212 W. Park St. Livingston MT.  This is the Plaza Building (Western Drug / True Value Hardware etc..).  The entrance is on the W. Geyser St. side of the building which has ample parking (adjacent to Pizza Hut lot).  We request that you park anywhere, other than directly in front of Hair Salon, which includes a handicap space.

To make sure we have the correct size uniform please review the chart below and text (406) 223-8548 (or email mountainwestaiki@gmail.com) your child’s name, age and size dogi needed.

One of the first things covered in class will be how to dress for training with the uniform and tie on  the belt.  If you wish to get a jump on this here’s an instructional diagram:

There will be a variety of basic instructions, like how to bow onto and off the training mat, at the start of the first class.  Our experienced instructors will explain all this to your child before we start the first session.  We also have a “senior” youth (sempai) present throughout the session to serve as an example for the other children.

Safety is of utmost importance while training.  We require that a parent or responsible adult be present for most classes in case something arises that your child needs attention with.  Depending on the age and maturity of the student this can be waived after the 1st class.

MWA uses a grading system based on the Japanese educational program of 10 levels.  Think of this as standing at the bottom of a staircase with 10 steps to the top.  The initial step is #10 (ju-kyu) which will be your child’s grade after successfully testing at the conclusion of the Summer Program.  To help reinforce the system our students learn “how to count from 1 – 10” as part of the curriculum; as well as, a fair amount of vocabulary used during training at the dojo.  Here’s a chart with numbers:
