Holiday Gathering

Special training workshops or “gasshuku” are events that bring students together to focus on a specific topic or experience a guest instructor‘s approach to aikido. Since our first Gasshuku in 2016, MWA has held these types of sessions to foster more intensive training opportunities for our students.  Workshops are held in a single day at the MWA locations throughout the year. Participation is limited to a maximum 25 students per session. Students and the instructor experience more personal interaction using this format.

Saturday December 14, 2019  James Sterling (3rd dan) will return as our guest instructor. Sterling sensei is the chief instructor at Shidokan Las Vegas, NV. He brings marital arts experience spanning 30 years and his “sold out” 2018 winter Gasshuku received 5 Star ratings.

Sterling Sensei is among Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) raising stars.  He frequently accompanies John Messores Shihan to serve as uke. A true warrior spirit and skill set best describes Sterling’s approach to Aikido. His recent ASU Camp classes and special workshops have received rave reviews. Here’s an excerpt of Josh Gold’s editor of the Aikido Journal comments about Sterling Sensei “Any skeptics who believe the art of aikido is incapable of forging an authentic warrior should meet Sterling Sensei. He’s got a huge heart, solid technique, the spirit of a leader, not to mention that he’s tough as nails.”  (see the complete article) Aikido Journal

This event will conclude with the MWA dojo’s annual holiday season pot luck dinner. Out of town Gasshuku attendees are not required to bring a dish or beverages. These will be provided by MWA members as you will be our guests. We ask that you plan to join us and Sterling Sensei to ring in the holidays.

MWA gasshuku are open to aikidoka of all levels regardless of rank or school affiliations. Please be mindful of the keiko (training session) start times which are 9:00 a.m. – noon and 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.  We ask that student’s help to defray the cost of conducting these sessions by making a contribution using the above link and at the same time registering for the limited space event. The link has a suggested amount of $30, but registrants may contribute any amount they wish.  Be sure to use the “drop down” menu to indicate STERLING WORKSHOP for this event.  You will receive a separate confirmation email once your registration is processed.

This event will be hosted at the MWA Billings dojo.
